American scientist Samuel Morse (1791-1872) was a major contributor to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system. He patented his invention of an electrical telegraph in 1837. His first message, sent in Morristown, New Jersey, was "A patient waiter is no loser." This diagram showing two men at the time hanging telegraph wire dates to 1876.
