Breast cancer surgery. Image 2 of 9. Surgeon using a navigator gamma guidance system (upper centre) on a woman's breast. This is a type of radiation detector used to isolate radioactively labelled cancer cells. The lymph nodes and ducts are blue as they have been highlighted with a tracing dye so that the surgeon can locate them. In this operation, called a modified radical mastectomy, the entire breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes are being removed in order to remove the malignant (cancerous) tumours. The surgeon will then reconstruct the breast by moving part of the latissimus dorsi back muscle into the breast and inserting a prosthetic implant. For a series showing this procedure, see images M122/497 - M122/505.
