"Kastom" is a Bislama word derived from the English word "custom", but its meaning encompasses all things customary, traditional, and related to magic and sorcery. Some islanders live in the kastom way - wearing traditional clothing they have made themselves - and avoiding the European dress code enforced by christian missionaries in the past and today. Kastom villages tend to be off the beaten track, and villagers will don shorts and shirts when they go down to the coast.
