SUNDIALS 456 — SUNDIALS Waygateshaw, Carluke, Lanarkshire (see Vol. 406).—This dial (Fig. 1630), having a lion sup-port, stands at present, along with other sculpturedanimal figures, over the old archway leading to themansion-house of Waygatesliaw, on the Clyde. Theheight of the whole is about 3 feet. Botvland, Galashiels, Selkirkshire.—This dial* () is designed on the same principle as the oneat Cadder; the square block of the dial-stone havingits angles canted off on each face. There are four cup-hollows measuring about 7 inches, each having a metalgnomon. On the upper surface of the dial-stone thereis a horizontal dial of bronze or copper, and on eachside of the gnomon is an engraved table for every dayof the year, arranged in monthly columns, with thefollowing inscription behind, which shows that dial-makers were not antagonistic to watchmakers, but rather the reverse:— SET YB WATCH SO MUCH FASTER OR SLOWER THAN YE TIME BY YE SUN.
