In 1812, the construction of steam works was commenced at Fair-mount, (the city having been supplied previously by means of twosteam works ; one on Chestnut street near the Schuylkill, forcing thewater to the other at Centre now called Penn square,) and in 1815 wasso far completed as to be put in operation. But it soon became apparent tliat the small and expensive supply-thus obtained would not meet the demand of a great and growing city,and that some other system must be adopted better calculated to securethe great objects of economy and abundance.
