Prehistoric Doggerland region, illustration
Illustration depicting the prehistoric region known as Doggerland. It was a land area that used to connect Britain with north-western continental Europe and was flooded by rising sea levels between 18,000 and 9000 years ago. This forced the inhabitants of the Mesolithic era (Middle Stone Age) to move onto higher ground, including in present-day Britain and the Netherlands. The region used to consist of sloping hills, marshland, and woodland, but is now submerged beneath the North Sea. Many artefacts, including footprints, have been preserved on the seafloor of the North Sea.
