During the American Revolution (1775–1783), in the Battle of Long Island (August 27-30, 1776), General Stirling with his 400 Maryland troops oppose British Lord Cornwallis with Stirling succeeds in driving the British back to the house pictured here, known as Cortelyou's House. A shower of bullets burst upon the Marylanders from the windows. After 250 of the 400 have fallen, Stirling surrendered. Note the date on the side of the house: 1699.
