Kirghiz winter camp, Wakhan corridor, Afghanistan

A Kirghiz winter camp, Achick Tosh, is surrounded by a snowy landscape after an unusually frigid and harsh late spring snowstorm covered the mountains and valleys in over a meter of snow-goats, sheep and yaks that died of starvation and cold lie in the snow in front of the camp, in the Little Pamir mountains, Wakhan corridor, Afghanistan. The Kirghiz are nomadic herders who spend the entire year moving with their flocks of sheep, goats and yaks in the high and barren Pamir range near the borders with China, Pakistan and Tajikistan. For about four months in the winter, most of the Kirghiz live in small permanent mud huts, while living in yurts for the rest of the year. They are completely dependent on their animals for milk, meat, and wool for their yurts and clothing, and as a resource to trade for other goods.
