Cut a similar hexagonal holein this, and when it fits the shaft and theknop properly, take them apart, and solderthe shallow cup to the knop. Next cleanthe knop in pickle and slip it into placeon the shaft, and turn up a band ofmetal about ^ inch broad to fit the shaft 73 Candlesticks 74. Fig. 27 underneath the knop. Solder two rows of Candlestickssquare twist with a plain flatted wire be-tween to the upper edge of this band. Asimilar but smaller band having been fittedto the upper part of the knop, the latter cannow be slipped into position and rivetedfirmly there. You can now fasten this inits place on the shaft with small screwsor rivets. Beat out a shallow cup out of14 copper ^ inch deep, and about i inchoutside diameter. Tap a screw on theend of a piece of ^-inch German silver wireabout I inch longer than the shaft, and onthe other end solder the shallow cup youhave just beaten out. You will now needto cut plates of thick metal, size 14 or 16,and after drilling a hole the size of thecenter rod, to fit them inside the top andbottom of the shaft. These plates are toprevent movement when the whole candle-stick is screwed together. You will nowneed a screw nut and a washer-plate. Fitall the parts carefully together, and screwthe nut tight.
