The Campaign in Sicily 1943 The Drive for Messina 10 July - 17 August 1943: Stretcher bearers bringing in a wounded British soldier in the Centuripe area. The rugged terrain in the north east of Sicily greatly helped the defending Axis forces to delay the Allied advance especially around Centuripe, Regalbuto and Troina.
