A plaque on Bank House in King's Lynn marks the birthplace of Samuel Cresswell the arctic explorer.


This plaque marks the birthplace in King's Lynn of Samuel Gurney Cresswell in 1827. In 1842 he joined the Navy and took part in the attempts to rescue the Franklin expedition and he became the first naval officer to traverse the Northwest Passage. He was eventually promoted to the rank of Captain but retired from the navy through ill-health and died at King's Lynn in 1867.
