Septic shock. Illustration showing areas where untreated infection can lead to septic shock. The enlargements show the eardrum (top), alveoli of the lungs (upper left), the appendix (lower left), and the bladder (lower right). Localised infection in these areas can spread, resulting in overwhelming infection and septicaemia (blood poisoning). This can result in septic shock, with fever and a drop in blood pressure which can be fatal.
