He was graduated from theNew Bedford academy, and at eighteen years of agebecame a clerk in a New York commission 1825 he became a partner in the whal3-oil ship-ping firm of Grinnell, Minturn & Co., with whichhe remained actively connected until his retirementfrom business in 1849. He was a warm friend ofseamen, especially whalers; great-ly interested iu geography, and de-voted a great deal of time to thestudy of arctic exploration. In1850 he bore the entire expense ofan expedition in search of Sir JohnFranklin, from whom nothing hadbeen heard for five years. Twovessels, named respectively the Ad-vance and Rescue, were purchased,strengthened and thoroughly fittedout. Under a joint resolution ofcongress they were approved May5,1850, and accepted by the UnitedStates. The squadron sailed fromNew York in May, 1850, undercommand of Lieut. E. J. de Ha-ven, U. S.
