Sulaiman Mountains, Pakistan, satellite image. The contrasts of light and shadow reveal the rugged nature of this mountain landscape where peaks can reach over 3000 metres in height. This is an area of the Sulaiman Mountains near the Afghanistan- Pakistan border. The Sulaiman Mountains form part of a large uplifted area that is a natural barrier to humid winds that blow from the Indian Ocean to the south. This barrier creates the arid climate in southern Afghanistan. Image acquired in visible and infrared wavelengths on 28 April 2001 by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) sensor on NASA's Landsat 7 satellite.
