Pair of Bate patent lorgnettes. Lorgnettes consist of a spectacles front and a single handle on one side. They were invented by English optical instrument maker, George Adams (1709-1772) in around 1770. These lorgnettes function to aid vision but were also fashionable accessories throughout the nineteenth century. The Bate patent lorgnettes (named after Robert Bate) were introduced in 1825, they included a spring action allowing the lenses to fold over one another to double up as a single lens. This example is made from silver and dates from 1830.
