UK-based Romanians and environmentalists demonstrated on the North Terrace of Trafalgar Square against the establishment of a gold mine in the picturesque Rosia Montana area. They say the mine will use large quantities of cyanide in the god refining process, endangering ground water supplies and risking an important area of the Danube catchment. They also say that the vast opencast mine will cause the destruction of three mountains and ancient Roman gold mining galleries will be lost. The opencast pit will cover an area of eight square kilometres.
