The township houses of mixed race residents, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa

My township guide showed me these houses, within easy reach of central Grahamstown, as the homes of 'coloured' or mixed race residents, who speak Afrikaans as their first language and, although oppressed under apartheid, distrust the ANC, as they perceive black South Africans have been the main beneficiaries of social promotion initiatives. Such people have a substantial number of non-African ancestors: workers from India, Indonesia and 17th century Afrikaner trekboers marrying into the indigenous Khoisan population of the Cape or taking Malay slaves as wives.
