George Cross and citation award by King George V1 ceremoniously displayed in Palace Square, Valletta, Malta, September 1942
In April 1942 King George V1 decided to award the George Cross to the Island of Malta. The citation, dated April 15th 1942, reads: 'The Governor of Malta: To honour her brave people I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history.' The George Cross was presented to the island by the Governor, Lord Gort, 13 September 1942, after the the island's future had been secured by the safe arrival of the Santa Maria Convoy in August, an event in which the severely damage tanker, Ohio entered Valletta Harbour strapped to destroyers. A Crown Copyright photograph of the George Cross and George V1 citation in Palace Square, shortly after the presentation in September 1942. The George Cross itself is a little soft in the original photograph.
