[Vol. XXXVIII, No. 4. CHUCK FOR BORING BEARINGS The accompanying drawing and half-tone show the de-tails and application of a chuck which was designed prin-cipally for boring split bearings as built by F. J. Stevens, then master mechanic of the Lackawanna & WyomingValley Railroad, Scranton. Pa., and now master mechanicof the Ft. Wayne & Northern Indiana Traction old way of boring these bearings was to place a clampon one end before putting the bearings in the lathe Detail of Motor-Bearing Chuck After the bearings were in the chuck some time was re-quired to line them up properly before the cuts could bestarted. Now the bearings are placed in the chuck andtightened with two ring-nuts. The bearings are boredabsolutely true both as to center and end or face, while thework itself is done in less than one-half the time requiredby the old method. The chuck consists of a cast-iron cylinder, one end ofwhich is of a size that can lie threaded to fit the lathespindle and the other large enough to admit the the casting is put in the lathe and the threads arecut for the spindle, whereupon it is put on the spindle andthe remaining machine work finished.
