Beneficial nematodes. Fluorescent light micrograph of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora nematodes. Symbiotic Photorhabdus luminescens bacteria in the worm

Beneficial nematodes. Fluorescent light micrograph of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora nematodes. Symbiotic Photorhabdus luminescens bacteria in the worms' guts have been labelled with green fluorescent protein. This roundworm parasitizes insects and is used as a biological control agent against soil pests. The roundworm enters the insect host where it feeds and reproduces. While in the host, the gut bacteria are regurgitated. It is these bacteria and not the worm, that kill the insect.
