Mechanical strain testing. Physicists adjusting a multiaxial test system, which involves multiple rams exerting forces from all directions onto the material being analysed. This test determines whether changes in the material's physical properties (strain) take place in response to mechanical stresses. The strain in the material is then measured using a laser interferometer. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK.
