In August of that same year theyoung cleric was ordained by His Eminence, CardinalEngelbert Sterckx. and he immediately went toOregon, being appointed to Roseburg, and there en-tered upon his missionary work. From that chargehe was transferred to Oregon City and thence to , or French Prairie, as it was then known, andthe cradle of the Catholic church in Oregon. In1871 he was honored by his appointment to the pres-idencv of St. Michaels College in Portland, Oregon,and so favorably did he show in that light that in1884 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Idaho, the.
