Great Storm of 1987, thermal infrared satellite image. This image was obtained at 04:42 on 16 October 1987 by the advanced very-high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) on a NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather satellite. The UK and Ireland and surrounding countries are outlined in green. This storm hit the South East of England on 16 October 1987, bringing hurricane-force winds. It developed rapidly and forecasters were unable to predict its path or ferocity. Gusts measuring over 165 kilometres an hour were recorded on the UK's southern coasts. The storm felled 15 million trees, severely damaged buildings, blew ships ashore and killed 18 people.
