Clients departing - or maybe arriving - by horse in a typical 15th Century Inn yard. Inns were generally purpose-built to accommodate travellers with more bedrooms than the average house and substantial stabling. Some of the earliest great inns were built by monasteries in centres of pilgrimage. Since taverns sold wine which was far more expensive than ale or beer, they catered to richer patrons and were restricted to towns; but were outnumbered by alehouses. Some of the larger inns had more scope for event with galleries around a courtyard to provided an arena for plays or cockfights.
