This scene is one of several designs that the English sculptor and draughtsman John Flaxman (1755–1826) did to illustrate passages from the Greek epic poet Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, a commission he had been given by Georgiana Hare-Naylor while he was living in Rome. It represents Diomed casting a spear against Mars. It was done 1793.
