A rotavirus is a wheel-shaped virus that gets its name from its complex shape. Its genome consists of 11 double-stranded RNA segments that generate six structural proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, VP4, VP6 & VP7) and six nonstructural proteins (NSP1-6). Each virus particle is surrounded by a triple layer coat. Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea among infants and young children, It is a genus of double-stranded RNA virus in the family Reoviridae. By the age of five, nearly every child in the world has been infected with rotavirus at least once, but with each infection, immunity develops, and subsequent infections are less severe. There are five species of this virus, referred to as A, B, C, D, and E. Rotavirus A, the most common, causes more than 90% of infections in humans.
