All the best qualities of theextinct trotting families and those that are fast be-coming extinct have been engrafted upon and haveserved to improve the families that are crowding themout of existence. It is a case of the survival of thefittest, but those which have been forced to succumb,or some of them, at least, have exerted an influence 104. The tendency today is to inbreedto the Hambletonian strain, and this method of breed-ing is producing excellent results. The time maycome when an outcross may be necessary. There willthen be plenty of first-class thoroughbred familiesthat may be employed to advantage.
