There are cases, however, where thehymen forms a complete septum, as in one reported by Godefroy,^*where the mucus which accumulated behind it in the vagina of aninfant of two months had produced compression of both rectum andurethra. Cases of the greatest interest have been published which showvery clearly the close relation between the different parts of the hy-. In the normal con-dition there is often a prolongation in the form of a valve or uvulawhich covers the meatus in part, and cases have been observed wherethere was a very distinct hymen provided with fringes covering themeatus; ^^ and at times the hymen has entirely covered this orifice, causing a retention of the urine in the new-born.^^ This is a superfi-cial atresia which might be called imperforate urethral hymen.^^ Itshould not be confounded with aplasia of all or a part of the urethrawhich may exist by itself, or with persistence o
