The Hornbaker family in this countryhad its origin in Pennsylvania, the lirst of the name in America havingbeen an early settler in that state, and the family, now a very large con-nection, holds annual reunions at Scranton, in that state. John W. Hornbaker grew up on the farm in central Indiana uponwhich his mother had settled upon moving from Kentucky and marriedPolly Finley, a neighbor girl who also had entered Indiana by way of Ken-tucky, and then began farming on his own account, becoming- a well-to-dofarmer and stock raiser in Monroe county. He and his wife were membersof the Christian church and took a warm interest in all good w(;rks in theircommunity. They were the parents of three children, James AI., whoresides in Oklahoma; Finley D., the immediate subject of this biographicalsketch, and America J., who died in her early womanhood.
