China: Empress Zhu (1102-1127), consort of Emperor Qinzong, 9th ruler of the Song Dynasty (). Hanging scroll painting, c. 1126-1127. Empress Zhu, formally known as Renhuai, was consort to Emperor Qinzong. She became empress when Emperor Qinzong inherited the throne in 1126, after Emperor Huizong had abdicated in the face of Jurchen invasion. The entire imperial family was captured a year later during the Jingkang Incident. Many of the women were distributed among the Jurchen men as slaves, which would have been Zhu's fate had she not committed suicide to avoid sexual abuse.
