German Kaiser and Prince of Monaco. German Kaiser Wilhelm II (left, 1859-1941) and Prince of Monaco Albert I (right, 1848-1922) on one of the Kaiser's racing yachts named 'Meteor'. This photograph dates from 19 July 1913, the year before the First World War began, with Germany as one of the leading protagonists. Wilhelm II, who reigned from 1888 to 1918, competed in many yacht races. There were five racing yachts commissioned by the Kaiser named 'Meteor'. Prince Albert (reigned from 1889) spent much of his time studying oceanography, funding and participating in numerous research voyages. Prince Albert was a pacifist and tried unsuccessfully to dissuade Wilhelm II from going to war. This photograph is from the Bain News Service.
