Istanbul, satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is green, urbanised areas are pink and grey and agricultural areas are shades of brown. Istanbul is the capital of Turkey, and is the only city in the world to be situated in both Europe and Asia. The land mass at left is part of the Baltic peninsula and the land mass at right is the Anatolian peninsula. The two are separated by the Bosporus strait, which connects the Black Sea in the north with the Sea of Marmara in the south.
