Slavery and four years of war : a political history of slavery in the United States, together with a narrative of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War in which the author took part, 1861-1865 . Shenandoah Valley—Emancipation 0^0 Imbodens and Jenkins cavalry held the upper valley in theneighborhood of Mount Jackson and New Market, but gener-ally retired without fighting when an expedition moved againstthem. As we were in the enemys country, our movementswere generally made known promptly to the Confederates, and our expeditions usually proved fruitless of substantialresults, I led a force of about one thousand men in January,1863, to Front Royal, then held by a small cavalry force whichI hoped to surprise and capture, but I succeeded in doingnothing more than take a few prisoners and drive the enemyfrom the place, with little fighting. We took Front Royallate in the evening of a very cold night, and decided to hold ituntil the next day. Not being sure of our strength, and toavoid a surprise, I was obliged to keep my men on duty through-out the night. A feeble attack only was made on us at daybreak.
