In the early days of electric traction the mostcommon form of rail for city use was the girder, a typical sectionof which is illustrated in Fig. 224. This is anoutgrowth of the old tram rail used on horserailways. It has a flat projection, the tram,alongside the head, on which vehicles may bedriven. The flat steel surface makes an ex-cellent rolling surface for wagon and carriagewheels, the gauge of which usually corresponds to that of standard track (4 ft. 8J in.). Itschief advantage from the standpoint of therailway company is that there is plenty ofroom for dirt and snow to be pushed away bythe flanges of the cars. If the company main-tains the paving, it may be to its advantageto have teams use the steel track rather than the paving, althoughthis advantage in maintenance is probably more than counterbalancedby the delay of cars through the regular wse of the track by teams.
