The nave (centre) of Greensted church, Essex, is built of oak logs split lengthwise & mounted vertically. Reputedly Saxon (845 or 1060+), heavily restored 1847-8: original wooden cill replaced by brick, Victorian versions of Tudor dormer windows inserted into Tudor tiled roof which replaced the original thatch. Church reputedly founded c 654 by St Cedd as a wooden chancel/sanctuary (R) rebuilt in C16th brick. A dendrochronology date obtained in the 1960s confirmed that the palisade nave was added c 845, but this but was re-dated in 1995 to c 1060-1100 which, if accurate, makes it immediately pre- or post-Conquest. The weatherboard tower & shingle spire date from the Stuart period (C17th).
