Rhizoctonia plant fungus research. Plant pathologist evaluating a fungal culture of Rhizoctonia solani. This fungus causes a wide range of diseases in plants around the world. Diseases it causes and plants it affects include brown patch (lawn grasses), black scurf (potatoes), bare patch (cereals), root rot (sugar beet), belly rot (cucumber) and sheath blight (rice). It also causes damping off, a condition that kills plant seedlings.
