The crystalline metamorphic rocks aremainly syenitic and micaceous gneiss, with micaceous, horn?blendic, and talcose schists. Occasional small dykes ofdiorite, greenstone, and basalt traverse these rocks, sometimes interstratified, but oftener breaking through them 2. The rocks of the first division are tilted at \ery higlangles; those of the second division, the eastern valley otthe Tennessee, are fractured and distorted at nearly everyconceivable angle, and, in consequence, it is the edges olthe liplifted strata which here form the surface.
