From the galerie des cerfs. Galerie des Cerfs we go directly into the vast rooms devoted purely to the art col-lections, namely, the Picture-gallery, the Tribune, the Treasure. 294 ART AND CRITICISM. Tower, and the Galerie de Psyche. This latter is a long andcomparatively low gallery, running along the northern facadeof the chateau between the Museum Tower and the TreasureTower, and constructed specially to receive a very importantseries of painted glass windows saved by the worthy AlexandreLenoir from the chateau of Ecouen—most precious works,painted in grisaille, and representing the various incidents ofthe legend of Psyche. This series was executed for Anne deMontmorency by Bernard Palissy, if we may believe a traditionwhich many experts are inclined to ratify. The cartoons areattributed by the same tradition to no less an artist than Raph-ael. Whether this be exact or not, there can be no doubt thatthe designs are Italian, and as the legend of Psyche was verymuch a la mode in the sixteenth century, it is not surprisingthat the original cartoons were vulgarized by the engravings ofMarc Antonio Raimondi.
