Carved brown lacquer box with phoenixes, mid-late Ming dynasty, China, 1500-1644. A brown lacquer rectangular box and cover. The cover is boldly carved with a pair of phoenixes amongst large peony heads and dense foliage. The sides have similar flowers, the flower-head centres with diaper pattern. The background is painted matt red with a metal lock.
