Their flesh iscut up and kept to feed the dogs in winter, the blubberis boiled down at the factory, and the hides are shippedto England, where they become the porpoise hides ofcommerce. Harpooning whales from a boat affords excellent sport, and several can be killed in this manner on any suitableday. I found that the more successful plan was to saildown on to them. With a shoulder gun, firing a lightharpoon, one could kill large numbers of them, but Iam told that this has the effect of making the whales leavethe place. The Companys trading boats, small craft of about tentons, are usually open, but some have a small cabin sail well off the wind, but not when close hauled. Imade a voyage in the first that sailed for the north. AtEskimo
