Loons and Grebes Red-throated Loon Gavia stellata (Pontoppidan) Status: The Red-throated Loon is probably a vagrant. One specimen was taken by Capt. Joe R. White on the Marais des Cygnes River, near Ottawa, Franklin County, on 20 October 1925. There are several sight records from Shawnee and Johnson counties (Tordoff 1956) and Chase and Franklin counties. Three of the sight records in Johnson, Shawnee, and Riley counties occurred on 10 April and from 8 to 18 May. There

Look for this species, as well as the Arctic Loon, on large bodies of water during spring and fall 13.
