Sixty-flve volumes of Alexander Hamiltonspapers, bought for $30,000, were also published at a costof $6,000. The papers of James Monroe, consisting of33 volumes, were bought for $30,000. Benjamin Frank-lins papers, in 33 volumes, were bought in 1883 at acost of $35,000. Although the government paid $165,000 for thesepapers, they are regarded as priceless.
