'The Library, Durham Cathedral', 1893. The Romanesque cathedral in Durham dates almost entirely from the 12th century. It was a medieval site of pilgrimage due to the presence of the remains of St Cuthbert. It also houses the remains of the Venerable Bede. The Cathedral Library includes 7th and 8th century manuscripts of Northumbrian origin.
