Doctor Bemis carne to Worces-ter to take the place temporarily of one of the physicians in the StateLunatic Hospital, and was soon after appointed assistant physician toDoctor George Chandler, who was superintendent of that institution, andcontinued in that connection eight years. Doctor Chandler resigned atthe close of the year 1855, and Doctor Bemis was elected his successor by. SALISBURY STREET. the trustees. He was granted leave of absence for the purpose of traveland study in Europe, and after an extended tour of eight months, returnedand took charge of the hospital in the summer of 1857. Li this station heremained seventeen years, resigning in 1872. During this period severalimportant changes in methods and administration were carried through,and the institution maintained a high reputation among similar establish-ments throughout the country. He was the first to advocate the employ-ment of female physicians in asylums, and the custom soon became the closing years of his service here. Doctor Bemis purchased thevarious estates now constituting the hospital property at the lake, andsubmitted plans for the erection of buildings, and, in view of the change oflocation, again, in 1868, visited Europe to inspect hospitals and treatmentof patients there.
