The former railway bridge spanning the river Greta near Brundholme (1), Threlkeld, Lake District National Park, Cumbria, UK

In the first week of December 2015, nine months after this image was taken, Storm Desmond swept across north Cumbria. Following the exceptional rainfall, the surge of floodwater in the River Greta was so powerful that it destroyed the stone abutments of the old railway bridge, eroded the river banks and uprooted trees. The iron bridge fell into the torrent, was rotated through 90 degrees and deposited on the nearside riverbank close to where this picture was taken.
