The monument which his or friends may erect to his memory in the ceme-tery will crumble into dust and pass away; but hislife, his achievements, the work he has accomplished,which otherwise would be forgotten, is perpetuatedby a record of this kind. To preserve the lineaments of our companions weengrave their portraits, for the same reason we col-lect the attainable facts of their history.
