This arrangement is really the application of the junk ringpiston packing to the construction of piston valves, and theBrooks Locomotive Works plan is quite similar to the BritishAdmiralty practice. The joints between the bull rings and thefollowers are made steam tight, yet they are loose enough toprevent the packing from becoming bound by the follower. page 190 of our issue of June, 1898. The reports concerningthe operation of the valves in service are favorable, and thisform of packing may be expected to give good results. Graphic methods of recording statistics have made muchprcgiess during the past few years, and there is much to rec-ommend them. The manager of an important enterprise mustbe informed at all times as to the condition of the work
