The chief reason for the persistent sur-vival of cannibalism is to be found in thelight in which the natives regard the far as can be ascertained, the Maoriesdo not eat their fellow-men simply becausethey have any especial liking for humanflesh, although, as might be expected, thereare still to be found some men who havecontracted a strong taste for the flesh ofman. The real reason for the custom isbased on the superstitious notion that anyone who eats the flesh of another becomesendowed with all the best qualities of theslain person.
