The early 1900s caption reads: "NORMANS IN LONDON AT THE CORONATION OF WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR.—When the Norman-French duke, William, defeated the English at Hastings, they perforce elected him their king. He swore to rule them justly and well, but even during his coronation [December 25, 1066], there was some tumult in the streets, and his fierce Normans rushing out of the cathedral, slew every one they met of either sex."
