In the 1940 Presidential campaign, Republican candidate Wendell Willkie was hit in the head by an egg at the Chicago train station. This action shot photo's caption is; "Wendell Willkie ... reaches for a handkerchief Oct. 22 in Chicago after he had been hit near the left temple by an egg as he was about to board a train. Charles Mulrain, 53, admitted in police court that he bought two eggs, but said he could not recall throwing them. Mulrain was charged with breach of the peace and assault with a deadly weapon."
